Basic Selection Tutorial

The purporse of this tutorial is to demonstrate workflow of selections. In Blacksmith3D-Suite, all selections are currently vertex based. A polygon is said to be selected if all of it's attached vertices are selected as well.

Step 1. Press the left arrow key to view the character from the left side

Step 2. Choose the lasso selection tool, set the culling to none and set Hardness to 100%.

Step 3. Trace a line around the nose.

Step 4. Press the S key several times to soften the selection.

Step 5. Click on the Deform tab then select the Move In Plane deformer.

Step 6. Click on the viewport and drag the mouse to the right.

Step 7. Select the Rotate deformer, click on the center of rotation and drag the mouse down.

Step 8. Repeat the procedure for the chin and forehead.

Step 9. Press the down arrow key to view from the front, choose the selection brush, select the top of the ear and soften the selection with the S key.

Step 10. In the tool window, locate the Symmetry panel and select Deform Symmetrically. This option will only appear if your current tool is a deformer. Using a the Move in Plane and Rotate deformers, reshape the right ear as shown here.

Step 11. Press the left arrow key to view from the left, choose the Push / Pinchdeformer, make sure only Horizontal and NOT Vertical is selected. Click on the centre of the ear and move the mouse down.

Step 12. Repeat the procedure of selecting and deforming your get the desired look.

Step 13. For a more realistic effect, once the general shape of the head has been achieved, turn off the Deform Symmetrically option and give the character a unique, asymmetric look.
